About the Chaminade University of Honolulu
The Chaminade University of Honolulu is a private university in Honolulu, Hawaii affiliated with the Marianist order of the Roman Catholic Church. Father William Joseph Chaminade founded the Society of Mary, an organization that saw some of its missionaries move to Hawaii in the 1840s. Eight priests from the order moved to Honolulu in 1883 and started the Saint Louis School. The success of that school led to them opening the St. Louis Junior College in 1955. It would become Chaminade College in 1957 and the Chaminade University of Honolulu in 1977. The Saint Louis School is still open today but now serves as both a middle and high school for male students.
Now functioning as a full university, the Chaminade University of Honolulu maintains its affiliation with the Society of Mary. That affiliation shaped the goals and traditions still held by the university, including the commitment that it has to Catholic beliefs and the fact that it shapes the religious and educational beliefs of its student body. The Honolulu campus is home to one of the state’s only forensic science programs and multiple options for undergrads. One of the main requirements for on-campus residents includes service-learning projects. Students can choose from dozens of projects offered each year in Honolulu and on other islands.
