University of Houston Application Requirements

Getting into the University of Houston is classified “moderately difficult” on Peterson’s. There is about a 61 percent acceptance rate. First-year students are assured admission for high school class rankings in the top 50 percent. Individual review is available for GED recipients scoring 150 or higher. On average, freshmen achieve a 3.53 secondary GPA. Reaching at least a 21 ACT or 1080 SAT mark is preferred. Transferring undergrads avoid probation by holding 15 college-level credits and 2.5 GPAs or greater. Note that the Cullen College of Engineering requires as prerequisites:
  • Calculus I
  • Fundamentals of Chemistry
  • Physics
Starting the UH Graduate School requires accredited bachelor’s completion with minimum 3.0 GPAs. Admitted master’s candidates report a median 154 verbal and 151 quantitative GRE score. The Bauer College of Business has a GMAT exam range of 510 to 650. Look carefully for prerequisites, such as the Ph.D. in Creative Writing’s one year of foreign language. The University of Houston asks freshmen and bachelor’s transfers to apply by:
  • June 15th For Fall
  • December 1st for Spring
  • May 1st for Summer
Deadlines for graduate programs vary greatly though. For instance, MSSE in Subsea Engineering entrants apply until February 15th or October 15th.
