In this article, we profile the 20 most affordable online bachelor’s in foreign language degree programs of 2018.
Majoring in a foreign language such as Spanish, French, Arabic, or in a closely related cultural or language program adds value to you as an employee. While there are not many online programs available, we conducted research to find the most affordable and accredited foreign language programs online.
We reviewed approximately 48 colleges and universities that offered online bachelor’s in foreign languages, or closely related degrees. We gathered information from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES College Navigator) and verified accreditation. We selected schools that offered online bachelor’s programs costing less than $27,050 per year. These programs are listed in order of affordability.
Below is our list of 20 most affordable online bachelor’s in foreign language programs for 2018.
#20 – Drury University
Online Bachelor’s in Spanish
Undergraduate Tuition: $27,015
Drury University offers an online bachelor’s in foreign language. The degree is designed for those with an associate’s degree in Spanish who want to continue their foreign language education through the completion of a bachelor’s degree. The degree is delivered entirely online, and students should be readily available to interface with their instructor during the senior project. In addition to course requirements, students must test at the “advanced high” level in Spanish speaking and listening according to Drury faculty members administering the proficiency exam. Course content may include advanced grammar and composition, seminar in Hispanic culture studies, and the culture of Spanish America. Drury is ranked #26 in regional universities Midwest by U.S. News.
#19 – William Woods University
Online Bachelor’s in ASL
Undergraduate Tuition: $23,260
William Woods University provides a foreign language degree online in the form of American Sign Language and English interpretation. The program is well suited for individuals with an ASL industry certificate who do not yet have a bachelor’s degree or for individuals with an associate degree in ASL. Upon graduation, students are able to sit for the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) that is given by the Center for the Assessment of Sign Language Interpretation (CASLI). Courses within the pathway include ethics and decision-making, linguistics of American sign language, linguistics non-manual markers in ASL, senior capstone, and theory of interpretation. William Woods is ranked #75 in regional universities Midwest by U.S. News.

Mercy College provides accredited foreign language programs online for students interested in Spanish language fluency and culture. The program is delivered online and consists of 120 credits. Students can transfer in previous college credits towards undergraduate general education. Offered through the college of Liberal Arts, the program is designed for anyone interested in Spanish as opposed to many programs where the intended career path is teaching Spanish within an educational setting. Graduates often seek teaching opportunities but also leverage their Spanish speaking skills to gain an advantage within several employment contexts. Core courses include aspects of Caribbean culture, reading and comprehension, Spanish American culture, and Spanish culture.
#17 – Schiller International University
Online Bachelor’s in International Relations and Diplomacy
Undergraduate Tuition: $14,360
Schiller International University provides an online bachelor’s in foreign language combined with international relations and diplomacy. Schiller International University is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools and is accredited by several international accrediting agencies for its international campuses in Madrid, Heidelberg, and Paris. The international relations and diplomacy degree is designed for students to learn competencies in navigating international organizations in preparation for law school, journalism careers, foreign language, political science, or graduate school. The program provides intermediate foreign language classes in French, German, and Spanish. The degree consists of 120 credits, some of which can be transferred from other institutions.

National University provides a foreign language degree online for those interested in Spanish language fluency and cultural competence. The program is available online and consists of 180 quarter credits, many of which can be transferred in from other institutions. The degree is designed for any student seeking Spanish fluency in preparation for careers in a variety of sectors such as private industry, government, not for profit, and education. Many students also choose to pursue additional courses to earn teaching credentials in the state of California. Classes include advanced Spanish, advanced Spanish conversation, literature and culture, and literary readings in Spanish. U.S. News ranks National #131 in best online bachelor’s degrees.
#15 – University of Arizona
Online Bachelor’s in Africana Studies
Undergraduate Tuition: $11,877
The University of Arizona offers accredited foreign language programs online for students interested in taking foreign language courses within an Africana Studies program that focuses on the interdisciplinary study of African culture and experiences of the greater African diaspora. Students are required to take foreign language courses and can choose from a wide variety offered by University of Arizona. The degree intersects how race, culture, and gender have impacted the experience of African people as well as how those social forces continue to play a part in the African diaspora experience in contemporary culture. The degree prepares students for a wide range of careers or as a catalyst for graduate studies. U.S. News and World Report ranks University of Arizona #124 in national universities and #56 in best online bachelor’s degrees.
#14 – California University of Pennsylvania

California University of Pennsylvania offers a bachelor’s in foreign language online for those interested in learning the Arabic language and culture. In today’s increasingly multicultural world, knowing the Arabic language and culture is seen as an employable set of skills one can leverage into a variety of career paths. The degree is taught 100% online and caters to the needs of working professionals. All language courses are taught by native speakers and focuses on modern standard Arabic along with optional courses that teach Levantine and Egyptian dialects. The degree consists of 120 credits – 90 of which students can transfer from other academic institutions. Most transfer students can finish the degree in one year after the inclusion of transfer courses. CalUP is ranked #146 in regional universities North by U.S News.
#13 – Oregon State University
Online Bachelor’s in Spanish
Undergraduate Tuition: $10,797
Through its College of Liberal Arts, Oregon State University offers a foreign language degree online focusing on Spanish language and culture. The program is fully online and consists of 180 credits – many of which can be transferred in from other academic institutions. The program prepares students for a variety of careers as well as further education at the graduate level. All of the courses are developed by Oregon State faculty in accordance with the regional accrediting body, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Of the 180 credits, 45 consist of Spanish major classes which focus on Spanish language fluency and cultural awareness and competency. OSU is ranked #145 in national universities by U.S. News.
#12 – Arizona State University

Undergraduate Tuition: $10,792
Arizona State University offers an online bachelor’s in foreign language for students desiring an undergraduate degree in Spanish. The program consists of 120 credits with a minimum of 30 needed to be completed at Arizona State for the institution to confer the degree. At the time of completion, students should be at advanced levels of speaking, writing, and listening of the Spanish language. Courses include civilization of the Indohispanomexicano Southwest, Latin American society five case studies, and old and new Spaniards: culture and civilization of Spain. Admission standards include the typical general university standards that apply to freshman or transfer undergraduates at ASU. U.S. News ranks ASU #115 in national universities.

Undergraduate Tuition: $10,533
Indiana University provides students with accredited foreign language programs online in French or Italian. Offered through the Department of French and Italian under the auspices of the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences, students take beginning and intermediate courses in the foreign language as well as unique courses that provide cultural context and insight into French and Italian history, economics, and other aspects of French and Italian living. Language courses include accelerated elementary French or Italian, intermediate French or Italian conversation, and advanced grammar. #10 – University of Northern Colorado
Online Bachelor’s in American Sign Language Interpretation

The University of Northern Colorado provides a bachelor’s in foreign language online for those interested in becoming ASL sign language interpreters. The program offers two areas of emphasis including community interpreting programs and educational interpreting. The program provides a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes 34 competency areas dispersed into five domains. The program is structured so that graduates finish the degree and are prepared for national certification. The program is nearly all online as fall and spring classes are delivered via the web, and summer courses are hybrid delivery where students meet on campus for four weeks followed by two weeks online. UNC is ranked #231 in national universities.
#9 – University of Arkansas
Online Bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies

Unlike most bachelor’s in foreign language online, University of Arkansas provides an interdisciplinary degree where students can take several Spanish courses as well as a wide variety of courses from other academic disciplines designed to foster creativity and critical thinking. The program allows students to tailor the degree to their academic desires or career aspirations. Spanish courses include advanced Spanish, advanced grammar, cultural readings, and Latin American civilization. The curriculum courses total 120 credits, many of which can be transferred into University of Arkansas from other institutions upon matriculation. Admission requirements include having earned less than 75 credits, a 2.5 GPA, and meeting the general admission requirements as a freshman or transfer student as stated by the university. U.S. News ranks UA #133 in national universities.
#8 – University of Louisiana
Online Bachelor’s in Modern Languages with concentration in French
Undergraduate Tuition: $8,470
The University of Louisiana Monroe offers a bachelor’s in foreign language online for students studying French. The program is delivered online and focuses on teaching students French language proficiency and cultural knowledge. Under the auspices of the Modern Language department, the graduate should demonstrate advanced language reading, writing, and comprehending and be able to communicate at the intermediate high level upon graduation. Northern State University provides an online bachelor’s in foreign language for students wanting to learn advanced Spanish. The program is a bachelor’s degree consisting of 120 credits, many of which can be transferred in from another institution upon matriculation to NSU. Of the 120 credits, 32 are designated program requirements. Some required courses include integrated writing conversation and grammar, introduction to Spanish literature, introduction to Latin-American literature, and texts history and contexts in Spain and Latin America. Should students desire, the online program offers a four-week study abroad experience in Santiago, Chile. Northern State ranks #99 in regional universities Midwest by U.S. News.

The University of Southern Mississippi offers accredited foreign language programs online for students seeking an undergraduate degree focusing on Spanish, French, and literature. Students can choose from three concentrations including Spanish, French, or a dual language option including Latin and German. Students with previous foreign language courses or proficiency may choose to take the CLEP examination for credit towards language classes. In addition to online curriculum, students are able to take courses as part of a study abroad experience in Germany or Austria.
