Choosing Low Cost Online Degrees

We collected a pool of potential majors. We sought out to identify majors that attracted the most undergraduate students. Our focus was on online students. We consulted online resources such as U.S. News & World Report and College Census to determine the 10 most popular majors. We then turned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and PayScale to gather useful data. We examined the following categories:

  • Accessibility – Number of schools offering online degrees in that subject
  • Availability – Number of total degrees schools conferred in that subject last year
  • Job outlook predicted over the next 10 years for college graduates with degree

Finding Online Colleges with Low Tuition

The second tier to our ranking was to find online degree programs cheap without sacrificing quality. For each major selected, we researched the most affordable online colleges. We looked at schools that offer online degrees in our top 10 subjects. We then crunched the numbers. We determined the approximate total program cost (number of required credits x cost per credit). We chose the school with the lowest cost online degree.
