About Eastern Oregon University

Eastern Oregon University is a public university often called EOU. Established as the Eastern Oregon Normal School in 1929, it would become the Eastern Oregon College of Education just 10 years later. As a college, it began offering full bachelor’s degree programs, though students could still earn teaching certificates. Citing the need for a college for students in the region, the state would once again change the school’s name in the 1950s to Eastern Oregon College, which paved the way for it to become Eastern Oregon University. EOU is now one of seven schools with full funding and support from the state.

Located in La Grande, Oregon, the campus is close to several large cities that allow students to do practicums and internships with leading employers and organizations. There are several degree programs available in different professional fields and some vocational programs too. Budget cuts led to the university cutting some of its degree programs and bringing in more vocational options to help students get jobs immediately after they graduated. Those new programs helped enrollment at the university reach a high of more than 3,700 students. EOU has an undergrad acceptance rate of 97% and accepts a large number of the students applying to its graduate programs also.

Eastern Oregon University Accreditation Details

Students attending EOU can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and get loans and other types of financial aid because the university has regional accreditation. EOU created an accreditation review board that meets several types a year to make sure it can retain the accreditation it has from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). The university’s business programs also have accreditation, which comes from the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).

Eastern Oregon University Application Requirements

The main requirements EOU has in place for incoming freshmen include a completed application and a $50 application fee. Students can ask for a fee waiver, but they’ll need to fill out a separate form and show solid proof why they can’t afford that fee. EOU will accept a GED score sent by the testing agency or a transcript sent by a student’s high school. Students need to receive scores of C or higher in their college prep classes, including advanced work in English, science, social studies and math. A score from the ACT or SAT and a minimum grade point average of 2.75 are also required for guaranteed acceptance to the university.

EOU recommends that students look at any prerequisites required of its graduate programs, which usually include advanced classes in the same field the student chooses as a major. Most programs have a firm application deadline of July first for the fall semester but will offer rolling admissions if there are still spots left after that deadline. Graduate students need to access the EOU online application and submit it through the system. They also need to submit transcripts from their colleges and any other required documents, which may include a personal essay, graduate admissions or entrance exam score and/or letters of reference.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergrads at EOU pay $167 per credit hour as an Oregon resident, while nonresidents pay $252 per credit hour. Students can take 18 credits for $3,006 as a resident or $4,536 as a nonresident. They will pay this same amount each semester for their classes and fees. The cost for graduate students will range from $377 per credit hour for Oregon students to $467 per credit hour for nonresidents. A special program allows all permanent residents and legal immigrants to pay the same amount that Oregon residents do.

Financial aid packages can help students afford all their EOU costs and get aid for every year they spend at the university. The university offers a free online video that students can watch to learn the basics of applying for financial aid, but they can also talk to an aid counselor and get help in person or over the phone. Students need to complete entrance counseling before EOU will dispense any of the federal loans they get, which include both subsidized and unsubsidized loans as well as PLUS loans. There is also an online database that students can look through to find all the scholarships offered by the college and the steps necessary to apply. All the degree programs offered by Eastern Oregon University include financial aid opportunities for majors.
