About Grand Canyon University

Grand Canyon University originated on August 1, 1949.  Arizona Southern Baptists started a higher learning school in Prescott. In 1951, Grand Canyon College acquired an initial 90-acre tract in the “Valley of the Sun” for its permanent campus. In 1961, Grand Canyon earned candidacy status for regional accreditation. In 1984, the Board of Trustees voted to rename it Grand Canyon University. In  2003, the financially struggling institution was sold to Significant Education LLC. The United States’ first Christian for-profit became publicly traded on the NASDAQ in 2004. On March 17, 2008, GCU became accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating. In 2009, Grand Canyon invested $60 million to build the 135,000-square-foot University Arena. By Fall 2016, GCU had formed the Theological Seminary to train Baptist ministers. It was sold for $875 million in 2018. Grand Canyon University now holds non-profit status. It enrolls 70,000 students online and 20,500 on-campus. It has more than  70+ clubs plus 22 learning communities. In 2019, GCU received the Student Before Profits Award for its Online Ph.D. in Psychology. In 2017, Grand Canyon accepted the WAC Academic Excellence Award. It won the 2012 ENR Best of the Best Sports/Entertainment Award. Niche ranked it:

Grand Canyon University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA).  This widespread 19-state Western Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Education Department and Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education. The Academic Affairs Office also lists the following specialized accreditations:

Grand Canyon University Application Requirements

Getting into Grand Canyon University is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s. Fall 2017 applicants had a 67 percent acceptance rate. First-year students must graduate from an accredited secondary school with four units of English and three units of Math. Achieving GED scores above 680 would qualify. Freshmen need cumulative unweighted GPAs of 2.5 and better. GPAs over 3.0 are deemed test-optional. Otherwise, undergrads must reach the 19 ACT or 1000 SAT benchmark. Transfers holding 25-90 college credits are welcome with at least 2.25 GPAs. Grades of 2.75 and higher are needed for 6-24 transfer credits. Foreign learners must prove English skills with 500 paper or 61 internet TOEFL scores. The Graduate School seeks four-year bachelor’s majors with a minimum 2.8 GPAs. Several programs enforce a 300 GRE or 500 GMAT requirement. Doctorates mandate at least 30 master’s credits and 3.4 overall GPAs. The Doctor of Nursing Practice specifically demands a CCNE-accredited education and state licensure. Grand Canyon University has a freshman deadline of November 1st for Early Decision. U.S. students can apply through August 22nd for Fall, or January 1st for Spring enrollment. International students must file before July 2nd or November 1st. The Honors College closes on July 1st each year. Accordingly, complete the GCU Application online for free. Forward official transcripts to 3300 West Camelback Road in Phoenix, AZ 85017. Submit electronic testing results using SAT/TOEFL code 4331 or ACT code 0092. Fulfill other checklist steps like:

Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2019-20, Grand Canyon University is billing traditional undergrads $8,250 each semester or $16,500 annually. Studying part-time is $687 per credit. Summer Session courses are $310 per credit. Residing at the Phoenix campus’ dorms adds $1,875 to $2,500 each term. The Canyon 2700 meal plan is $2,550 extra. GCU budgets $800 for textbooks and $5,700 for miscellaneous expenses every year. Annual traditional attendance equals $32,100 on-site or $23,550 if commuting. Online bachelor’s programs generally charge $470 per credit. The BS in Information Technology is one exception at $449 per credit. Graduate School cohorts typically spend $530 per credit. The College of Doctoral Studies prices tuition at $670 per credit. Online Master of Divinity students pay $350 per credit. The Financial Aid Department connects 69 percent of full-time GCU students to median tuition assistance of $7,736 each.
