About North Greenville University

North Greenville University is a private university also known as NGU that is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Established as one of the first high schools in Greenville County, it opened in 1892 as the North Greenville High School. The North Greenville Baptist Association oversaw the operations of the school and helped it receive a charter from the state around the turn of the century. It would later become the North Greenville Baptist Academy, North Greenville Junior College and then North Greenville College before adopting the NGU name. Though it offered classes for freshmen and sophomores for several decades, the university added upper-level courses for students in the 1990s, which paved the way for the graduate and doctoral programs added to the curriculum later. NGU now has an enrollment of more than 2,200 students, making it one of the state’s largest private universities.

North Greenville University Accreditation Details

NGU has accreditation for both its education and music programs. That accreditation comes from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). It also holds regional accreditation, which is why students can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get a financial aid package. That regional accreditation comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). NGU can accept transfer credits from students who attended other schools because of this accreditation.

North Greenville University Application Requirements

Undergrads applying to NGU need to submit a completed online application and pay a $30 fee. Students who have financial difficulties can request a fee waiver. NGU will let them apply without paying that fee. They must also provide a high school transcript and an official score from the SAT or ACT. High school students with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher can sign up for college classes as a junior or senior. They will use the same undergraduate application and state on the application that they want to attend the dual enrollment program part-time. NGU has similar requirements for adult students. Most of the university’s graduate programs have the same requirements for incoming students. They need to pay a $30 application fee, which is due when they apply. The application asks for an essay of up to 500 words that explains why the student selected that graduate program and why they want to attend NGU. They need to contact their former schools and request that each one mail official copies of their transcripts to the university. There are also two required reference forms. One should come from a personal reference who will speak for the student’s character. The other will come from an employer or someone who has/had professional experience with the student.

Tuition and Financial Aid

At NGU, undergrads pay $520 per credit hour until they take 12 or more credits. They will then qualify for the full-time tuition rate of $10,560, which lets them take up to 19 credit hours each semester. Basic housing plans start at $2,450 per semester with another $2,670 due for a meal plan. NGU also offers housing options for married students for $650 each month. Dual enrollment students pay $125 per credit hour for their classes. Both online and degree completion students pay $425 per credit hour and another $80 in fees every semester. Students in a graduate program pay $395 to $475 per credit hour. Graduate students who submit the FAFSA and show financial need may qualify for one of the university’s scholar programs. The Champions for Christ program accepts applications up through the first of July and allows students to apply each year. Similar scholarships provide students with $1,800 or more each year. Undergrads can qualify for similar scholarships as well as federal work-study, loans and grants from the state and federal governments. Though North Greenville University offers financial aid for students in all of its degree programs, aid is not available for students in certificate programs.
