About University of North Carolina

For more than 200 years, the University of North Carolina has been providing an exceptional education. It is the oldest state university in the country. It started in 1771 when the colonial assembly of North Carolina chartered Queens College in Charlotte. The British government refused to sanction the school because it was founded by Protestant groups that wanted to be able to train ministers. Despite the fact that England did not approve of a school operated by “religious dissenters,” the academy remained open until the American Revolution began. After the war ended, William Richardson Davie moved to Halifax. He owned a plantation, practiced law and served in the state legislature. His service in the War for Independence led to large grants of land to Davie from the federal government. The same year North Carolina ratified the Constitution of the United States, Davie petitioned for a school of higher learning in the state. The school passed the legislature. In 1789, the school was chartered. The first classes held in 1795. Almost 1,400 acres of land was given to the school in Orange County and it was named Chapel Hill due to an abandoned Anglican Church of England that stood on the property. The school originally trained state leadership. By 1815, natural sciences had become an important degree program at the school. Even during the Civil War, the school remained open. It was one of the few Southern universities to do so. However, during Reconstruction, the school was forced to close temporarily as there were few students and no funding. the school to reopened in 1868. Today, there are almost 30,000 students attending the University of North Carolina.
