About University of North Dakota

The University of North Dakota serves as the flagship university of the state. Founded in 1883, the university opened before North Dakota became an official state. During its early years, it focused on training and educating the new students moving to the territory for some of the opportunities available there. Construction began on a campus in Grand Forks, but it didn’t take long before the school needed to add more buildings to keep up with an increase in its enrollment. Also known as UND and North Dakota, the university now ranks as one of the top employers in the state. UND provides opportunities for students to get hands-on training through some of its degree programs. Aviation majors can use flight simulation facilities at the local airport before they actually go up in the air. Nursing and medical students can work in any of the health clinics that the university operates around the state. Education majors will work in local schools. It also offers opportunities for nontraditional learners through its Division of Continuing Education, which offers online degree programs. U.S. News & World Report and Washington Monthly both rank UND among the best American colleges. When the university first opened, it educated fewer than 30 students. It now includes more than 3,000 graduate students and more than 11,000 undergrads.

University of North Dakota Accreditation Details

UND students who took college classes in high school and those who earned credits at other campuses shouldn’t have any issues with transferring those credits to the university. It has regional accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). NCACS and other types of regional accreditation also allow students to receive financial aid from the federal government and the state government after completing the FAFSA. UND also has accreditation for its programs in:
  • nursing
  • occupational therapy
  • psychology
  • law
  • public health and other degree programs
The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) also accredited its computer science and engineering programs.

University of North Dakota Application Requirements

Prospective UND students will find applications designed for incoming freshmen and both graduate and transfer students. The application for undergrads features sections that allow students to enter more information about what they want to study and what they did in high school. UND looks for students who completed a college prep curriculum that matches the standards created by the state. This type of curriculum typically includes three or more years of English classes and advanced math and science classes. Students should also study a foreign language and take some social studies classes and electives while in high school. In addition to the application, they need to submit a test score and a school transcript. Graduate students must meet different requirements based on what they want to study. All students must use the online application to apply to the UND Graduate School. They can then arrange for the university to receive any of the documents or information that it needs. This may include test scores or letters of recommendation. Many programs ask for a professional resume and some type of writing sample or essay. Students can upload those documents to the application. This ensures that the university gets all required information at one time.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The amount that students pay to attend UND depends on where they live before becoming a student. North Dakota residents pay around $352 per credit hour. Minnesota residents pay around $389 per credit hour. The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program allows students living in other western states to qualify for a reduced tuition rate of around $497 per credit hour. All other undergrads pay $836 per credit hour. The cost for graduate students is a little higher. North Dakota residents pay $357 per credit hour. Nonresident graduate students pay $849 per credit hour for most programs. Prospective UND students can complete the FAFSA and submit the form online. They just need their tax records or their parents’ tax records to use this form. Undergrads will usually qualify for government grants and loans. They may also gain access to the university’s work-study program and qualify for one or more of the loans that UND offers. Graduate students typically use loans to cover their costs. The government offers unsubsidized loans that allow students to borrow more than the amount they need to take a full course load. The University of North Dakota also recommends that graduate students look at possible scholarships.
