About Middle Georgia State University

Middle Georgia State University is a public institution. The main campus is in Macon, Georgia. The university has more than 8,000 students enrolled in master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degrees. It also has some certificate programs. Students are able to enroll in online classes, as well as attend a handful of campuses around the state. The official colors of the university are black, purple, and gray. The official mascot is named Duke. The students are nicknamed the Knights. The university was founded as Middle Georgia College in 1884. It became a university in 2015 after various name changes throughout the last century.

Middle Georgia State University Accreditation Details

Middle Georgia State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Accreditation was received in 2012 when Macon State College and Middle Georgia College were merged to become Middle Georgia State. The first approval for a graduate degree at the university occurred in 2015 when the SACSCOC approved degrees like the Master of Science in Nursing and the Master of Science in Information Technology. Middle Georgia State University Application Requirements

Incoming freshmen who graduated from high school within five years must:
  • submit evidence of having earned a high school diploma
  • have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.0
  • meet one of several writing and math criteria of the university
Students must also complete 17 credits of the university’s recommended high school curriculum in areas like:
  • math
  • English
  • science
Students who attended a home school environment are eligible to apply but must meet the university’s criteria for admissions. Items applicants must submit include a home school portfolio that features the courses taken by the student and the course descriptions. Students must also meet the same writing and math criteria of traditional students and complete the same recommended high school curriculum.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition at Middle Georgia State University is capped at 15 credits. With fees included, tuition is $527.67 for Georgia residents. It’s $833.80 for non-residents. At 15 credits, in-state students pay a total of $4,592.00 for tuition. Non-residents pay $6,963.00. Some of the additional fees students pay include a $25 orientation fee the first semester. There’s also a $165 recreation and wellness fee for the Macon and Warner Robins campuses. For online students, the rate is:
  • $130.00 per credit hour for online classes
  • $159.00 per credit hour for eCore classes
  • $125.00 per credit hour for GA Film Academy classes
For graduate students who attend online classes, the base rate for each credit is $255.00 per credit. It is $426.00 per credit when all fees are added. Students who live on campus and enroll in online classes aren’t exempt from campus fees. For traditional graduate students, the in-state rate is $613.00 per credit. The out-of-state rate is $1,108.00 per credit. Students who would like to apply for financial aid should submit their application as soon as possible. The university can process the student’s information in advance of when tuition is due. Students who have questions about financial aid may visit any of the offices on the university’s campuses. No appointments are necessary. After students receive a letter informing them about a financial aid award, they must officially accept the award to receive a distribution. Financial aid awards may include:

  • student employment offers
Qualified students attending the university may receive a HOPE Scholarship, as well as qualify for a Zell Miller Scholarship. Students applying to Middle Georgia State University who want a scholarship can qualify by meeting GPA requirements and taking recommended courses in high school.
