The University of Alabama is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The SACSCOC is the main regional body for accreditation of institutions of higher learning in the southern states. The university is accredited for bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees. The University holds numerous degree specific accreditations as well. The business school is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The engineering program is accredited by the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission. The education programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. When evaluating applicants for freshman undergraduate admission, the University of Alabama looks to the student’s high school GPA, course schedule, and ACT or SAT test scores to determine academic suitability for university admission. The minimum suggested requirements for success at the university are a 3.0 high school GPA and either an ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 1080. The writing portion of the ACT and the SAT are not required for admission. The University of Alabama uses a rolling admissions system. Applicants should have completed a college prep course of study in high school. Minimum high school course requirements include:- four units of English
- four units of social studies
- three units of mathematics
- three units of natural sciences
- one unit of foreign language
- five additional units of academic courses
Tuition and Financial Aid
Being a state subsidized university, the University of Alabama tuition is much lower for students who are residents of the State of Alabama compared to those that are attending from out of state. Annual in-state tuition for undergraduate students is currently $11,580. Out-of-state undergraduate tuition is currently $28,900. When you add in room and board, the cost of attendance is $28,804 for in-state students and $42,124 for out-of-state students. These annual costs do not include books and other miscellaneous costs of attending college. Fulltime Graduate tuition for 15 hours is $5390 per semester for in-state students and $14,615 per semester for out-of-state students. Hours above 15 credits are assessed at $470 per additional hour for in-state students and $1350 per additional hour for out-of-state students. Full time tuition at the School of Law is $11,805 per semester for in-state students and $20,935 per semester for out-of-state students. Financial aid is available to help defer the costs of attending the University of Alabama. All students seeking financial aid should fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For students with demonstrated financial need Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants and Alabama Promise Grants are available. Students qualify for these grants by filling out FAFSA. Loans are another option for financial aid. Subsidized and unsubsidized federal Stafford loans are an option for students who qualify. Graduate students may be eligible for federal PLUS loans. The Federal Work Study Program allows students with financial need to earn money for education expenses by working either in on-campus jobs or community service positions. Students may also apply for scholarships, many of which are based on academic performance. Qualification for these scholarships is based on grade point average and ACT or SAT scores.
