About Troy University

Troy University is a public university formerly known as the Troy State Normal School. Established in 1887, it opened as a division of the Alabama State University System that offered training and education programs for future teachers. This school would slowly add courses in other fields and begin offering full degree programs, which led to the state’s Board of Education giving it college status. Called the Troy State Teachers College from 1929 to 1957, it would then become Troy State College and Troy State University before adopting the Troy University name in 2005. This name allowed the university to show that it offered comprehensive programs and was more than just a state university.

In addition to the Troy, Alabama flagship campus, the university offers classes on its campuses in Montgomery, Dothan and Phoenix City. Many programs and classes are available through Troy Online too, which is the university’s online campus.
