About the University of Memphis

The University of Memphis is one of the largest public colleges in Memphis and one of the biggest ones in Tennessee too. Founded in 1912, the university opened as the West Tennessee Normal School, which the state established in 1909. The normal school offered education programs that terminated in a diploma before becoming West Tennessee State Teachers College and adding degree programs. As more students wanted to study business and other subjects beyond education, the college changed its focus and became Memphis State College and then Memphis State University.

Now called U of M for short, it has a large campus that is roughly five miles away from the heart of Memphis. Students often visit some of the tourist attractions in the city on the weekends and spend time downtown whenever possible. The buildings on its campus have a historic look and feel that the builders hoped would remind visitors of historic cities in the south. U.S. News and World Report and Forbes both rank U of M as one of the country’s best schools, and Washington Monthly ranked it as the 40th best university in the United States. The University of Memphis sees its enrollment grow slightly every year and now has a total enrollment of more than 21,000 students.

University of Memphis Accreditation Details

Most students today need financial aid, but only those who attend a university with regional accreditation can actually apply for that aid. The regional accreditation U of M has comes from one of the nation’s top organizations, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). SACS accreditation also gives any student who already earned some college credits transfer those credits to a new school. U of M has accreditation for its nursing, business, psychology and degree programs in other subjects too.

University of Memphis Application Requirements

The Office of Admissions at U of M offers checklists for both undergrads and graduate students. These lists help them see everything they must do when applying and view the deadlines for their applications. The undergrad application is just three pages long and starts with a page that allows students to share some background information. They will need to list their home addresses and phone numbers as well as their full names and email addresses. Undergrads should also submit a standardized test score and their official high school transcripts. Those transcripts must show that a student has a high school diploma and his or her grade point average.

Graduate students will use a similar application and can file it online too, but they also need to meet some other requirements. U of M asks for official transcripts from any of the schools a student previously attended and earned credits from that shows the dates the student attended and his or her grades. Many programs also ask for either references or letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic references that explain why the student would benefit one of the university’s graduate school programs. Students may need to provide writing samples or submit official test scores also.

Tuition and Financial Aid

U of M recommends that students use its tuition estimator to determine their costs for the next semester, but it also shows students how much they will pay based on their grade levels. Undergrads pay one rate plus fees, which equates to $434 per credit hour. Only Tennessee residents qualify for this rate though. Nonresidents pay $922 per credit hour, which also includes the various fees they pay. Those enrolled in an undergrad online program pay slightly less. Nonresidents pay $908 per credit hour, while Tennessee residents pay $488 per credit hour.

Graduate students pay similar fees. Those enrolled in a traditional graduate program pay $609 per credit hour if they also live in the state. Graduate students who are not from Tennessee pay $1,097 per credit hour. The cost for online grad students is $603 per credit hour for residents and $1,091 per credit hour for nonresidents.

Both current students and those applying to U of M may qualify for one of its scholarships. It recommends that students apply for funding by the beginning of December. The university awards scholarships to students based on both their test scores and their high school or college grades. Students should also use the FAFSA to receive federal and state financial aid. The University of Memphis allows students to apply for financial aid before or after they apply for a spot in one of its degree programs.
