The University of Memphis is one of the largest public colleges in Memphis and in Tennessee. It was founded in 1912. It opened as the West Tennessee Normal School, which the state established in 1909. It later became  West Tennessee State Teachers College and added degree programs. A growing number of  students wanted to study business and other subjects beyond education. The college changed its focus and became Memphis State College and then Memphis State University. Now called U of M for short, it has a large campus that is roughly five miles away from the heart of Memphis. Students often visit some of the tourist attractions in the city on the weekends and spend time downtown whenever possible. The buildings on its campus have a historic look and feel that the builders hoped would remind visitors of historic cities in the south. U.S. News and World Report and Forbes both rank U of M as one of the country’s best schools. Washington Monthly ranked it as the 40th best university in the United States. The University of Memphis sees its enrollment grow slightly every year and now has a total enrollment of more than 21,000 students.

The Office of Admissions at U of M offers checklists for both undergrads and graduate students. These lists help them see everything they must do when applying and view the deadlines for their applications. The undergrad application is just three pages long and starts with a page that allows students to share some background information. They will need to list their home addresses and phone numbers as well as their full names and email addresses. Undergrads should also submit a standardized test score and their official high school transcripts. Those transcripts must show that a student has a high school diploma and his or her grade point average. Graduate students will use a similar application and can file it online, but they also need to meet some other requirements. U of M asks for official transcripts from any of the schools a student previously attended and earned credits from. They must show the dates the student attended and his or her grades. Many programs also ask for either references or letters of recommendation from professional or academic references. These should explain why the student would benefit one of the university’s graduate school programs. Students may need to provide writing samples or submit official test scores also.
