Additionally, specialized design services is the industry that employs the most graphic designers, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. Because there are so many different industries that have a need for skilled graphic designers, the work environment for graduates of an online graphic designer bachelor’s degree program can vary a great deal.

A graphic designer’s job responsibilities depend largely on what industry employs them. Graphic designers who work in manufacturing may spend much of their time designing product packaging. Those who work in newspaper and magazine publishing design publication layouts.

The Job Outlook for Graphic Designers

Currently, the BLS predicts little if any growth in job opportunities for graphic designers, which means competition for jobs in this industry will be intense. The BLS expects the number of graphic designers working for newspaper, periodical, book and directory publishers will decrease by 35 percent over a decade.

There is good news, however, especially for graphic designers with the right set of skills. The BLS expects to see a 21 percent increase in graphic designer opportunities available in the computer systems design industry. That means that graphic designers with skills in creating aesthetically appealing and functional website layouts will have the best job prospects.

A Day in the Life of a Graphic Designer

The work environment for graduates of an online graphic designer bachelor’s degree program often includes a studio. Graphic designers typically use drafting tables and computer software to develop their designs through hand-drawn sketches and digital image creation. Some graphic designers are part of a collaborative design team. Others work independently. Around 20 percent of graphic designers work for themselves, according to the BLS. They enjoy the freedom of being their own boss, but they also face the challenges of running their own business.

Despite a somewhat bleak overall job outlook, graphic designers can still find work that offers them the chance use their creative skills.
