10. Charles Xavier: X-Men Films

In these films, Professor X plays a significant role. He is the leader of the X-Men, a group of superhumans.

He’s also the founder of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. At his school, you won’t find normal college life. This professor teaches students to control their powers. And his students often view him as a father figure.

In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jones is an archaeology professor. And his students admire him. In fact, some female students write love messages on their faces for him. Who could blame them?

For an archaeology professor, Jones is a perfect fit. He has real-world experience investigating what he teaches. And the film actor Harrison Ford plays him. This alone gives him major coolness kudos.

So far, there are four Indiana Jones films, starring Harrison Ford:

3. Minerva McGonagall: Harry Potter Films

Klump decides to take the solution himself. And it works. He loses 250 pounds in seconds. But the side effects split his personality.

He sometimes transforms into Buddy Love. And Love is nothing like the kind-hearted nutty professor Klump. No, Love is arrogant and obnoxious. And his behavior causes Klump major problems.

This film is a classic. It stars Eddie Murphy as Klump/Love and five other roles. Plus, it’s a fun twist on the Jekyll and Hyde trope.

Also, it’s a remake of another film. In 1963, Jerry Lewis starred in the original The Nutty Professor. It’s fun to see a film’s producer tackle the same story in a different way, especially Eddie Murphy’s rendition of the iconic Jerry Lewis nutty professor.

Ms. Frizzle is a genius inventor. She uses magical devices to teach her students science.

Women make up half of academia in the United States. And yet movies about professors center around male academics. In most films, women play the muse for male professors. They also play the graduate student love interest. But they are rarely the stars of their own films.

This must change. And it is, little by little. In 2017, we saw the film Hidden Figures. It follows the work of three African American women at NASA. They are brilliant, independent, and based on real women.

More films include female academics. But the number remains limited. Imagine Dead Poets Society if John Keating were a woman. A film like The Paper Chase with a film hero as a woman doesn’t exist.

There’s a scarcity of academic women in movies. We need more movies about women to land on the National Film Registry. But this new generation of filmmakers can change that.

The fact is that 31% of recent grads haven’t found a job six months after graduation. That’s the economy we live in.

What Are Bad Majors?

What makes a major bad is subjective. You should study what you love and what you’re passionate about. Employers look for people who perform. And the best performers are those aligned with their purpose.

But for the sake of this article, we defined a bad major as one that makes it difficult to:

Find a job after graduation (based on unemployment rates)
Make good money after college (based on average salaries)
Find both a lucrative career and one that pays you well

Since there are many reasons why a major might make it hard for you to find a job after you graduate or pay you livable wages, you should do your own market research on majors you’re considering.

But here are several reasons why a major might end up on a list of the worst degrees to get.

1. Competition is fierce.

If competition in a field is high, it makes it harder for recent college grads to break into the field.

2. Limited demand.

If there is low demand for a person with that major, earnings won’t be as high. You might also find it hard to land a job. The bottom line is that demand drives jobs and pay. Without it, you could have trouble finding a job with good pay.

3. You need a graduate degree.

A bachelor’s degree might not be enough to land a job or gain success in the field. Entry-level job opportunities might want master’s degrees instead of bachelor’s degrees. To find gainful employment, you might have to go back to school. You might even have to take out a student loan to do it.

Majors With High Unemployment Rates

Architecture

The worst degree to get at the current time is architecture. 13.9% of recent architecture graduates can’t find work.

Slow down in construction in certain areas has stopped the hiring of new architects. Improved technology and software have also slowed down hiring. As software improves productivity, it also slows down the need to hire more workers in the field.

Humanities

The next set of majors falls under the Humanities or Liberal Arts banner. This includes subjects like English Literature, Latin, Theology, and a Theater Arts degree. 9.4% of recent graduates in these majors have trouble finding work. That’s almost 10%, making these humanities subjects some of the worst majors due to high unemployment rates.

Social Sciences

After the humanities, you have the social sciences. This includes some of the worst college majors like American Studies, Criminal Justice, Economics, and Sociology.

Sociology

Since sociology is one of the most popular majors in colleges, it might come as a surprise to find it on a list of bad degrees. But the truth is that social sciences, such as sociology and communications majors, don’t pay well.

Is sociology a useless degree? Well, the answer depends on where, and if, you find a job. Since you find most sociology job postings in the public sector, your earnings tend to be less than private sector jobs.

The unemployment rate for students with sociology degrees also makes the college major a bad one. Sociology majors struggle to find work due to the jobless rate. Still, sociology remains a popular major.

But its popularity also impacts finding a job right out of college. With a large number of sociology majors flooding the workforce each year, there aren’t enough jobs for everyone. As a result, we see a high unemployment rate associated with this major, making it one of the worst college majors to pursue.

Other Social Science Majors

What about political science? Is it a bad degree to get?

Like sociology, you find most political science job postings in the public sector. As a result, you earn less in public than in private sector jobs.

If you want to make money with this major, plan on getting an advanced college degree. Lawyers and political analysts have advanced degrees. You might need a master’s degree or to go to law school to work in a good-paying job in the field.

But if you’re willing to go to law school, take out a student loan, and face fierce competition, your efforts might be rewarded with higher pay.

Majors With Low Earnings Potential

If your main goal out of college is to make money, then you might want to avoid a job in the liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences. Things like Poetry, Art History, Music Therapy, or even something as bizarre as Puppetry (yes, this is a real major) should be avoided.

Based on an NCES report, there are certain degrees to avoid if money is your primary concern after college. Majors listed on this report show low earnings for college graduates.

The report lists some of the worst majors and median annual earnings for college grads with bachelor’s degrees. Median earnings offer accurate readings of pay for this group of individuals. They are often more accurate than average earnings because they remove high and low outliers that skew average earnings numbers.

Majors to avoid because of a low average salary

Liberal arts and humanities: $40,300/year
Social work and human services: $40,500/year
Elementary education: $40,500/year
Fine arts: $40,500/year
General education: $41,300/year
Psychology: $41,400/year
Criminal justice and fire protection: $41,800/year
Education, other: $43,000/year
Sociology: $43,100/year
English language and literature: $44,600/year
History: $45,100/year
Linguistics and comparative language and literature: $45,400/year
Physical fitness, parks, recreation, and leisure: $45,500/year

For reference, information on this list is for graduates aged 25-29 with bachelor’s degrees. When the report was created, the median annual salary for this group of individuals was $54,700.

Majors with Low Unemployment Rates

Now that we’ve talked about the worst college majors with high unemployment rates, let’s discuss those with low unemployment rates. To find these majors, we pulled information from the NCES report listed above.

Since some of the “bad” majors have low unemployment rates but low earnings potential, it’s important to separate these numbers.

A major with low unemployment means you might have better career opportunities right out of school than if you chose to study a major with a high unemployment rate.

Education (general and elementary) offers the lowest unemployment rate. But it also offers some of the lowest median annual earnings. With a bachelor’s degree in education, you will face a 0.9% average unemployment. Elementary education and general education offer 1.3% and 1.4% unemployment rates. They are also listed among the lowest rates.

Though not listed among poor earnings potential, nursing offers one of the lowest unemployment rates. It’s a great time to go into nursing because demand is on the rise. Nursing majors face a 1.7% unemployment rate, which is much lower than other majors.

It’s important to discuss majors with high earnings potential when talking about those with low earnings. This gives you an idea of how the two compare.

Mechanical engineering: $74,000/year
Engineering, other: $70,500/year
Computer and information sciences: $70,100/year
General engineering: $68,900/year
Finance: $65,300/year
Economics: $64,900/year

As stated above, college grads aged 25-29 with a bachelor’s degree earn a median salary of $54,700.

Are you doomed with a bad degree?

In short, no. Even with what you believe are the dumbest college majors, you can still find success. But you might need to work harder and smarter.

Many students gain success after college. They find fulfilling careers that offer a stable income even with some of the top “useless” degrees. While they may not earn high salaries from the jump, they improve their employment prospects over time.

But if you’re worried that you might never see a return on your investment, there are two reasons why you shouldn’t be too concerned about going with one of the dumbest majors. Remember, what makes a major “bad” is subjective. Makes sense, right?

Love animals? Are you a vegetarian because of this love? Then this major may not suit you.

As an animal science major, you study animals. But you also focus on the role of animals in food production.

This means you work closely with agricultural animals, such as chickens and cows, to learn how they can feed the human population.

The good news is that you’re focusing your attention on how to provide safer, healthier, and more efficient ways to feed humans. And with an increase in public awareness on health, demand for animal scientists rises. In fact, over the next decade, growth will rise 11%.

But if you’re opposed to a carnivore lifestyle, this college degree won’t work for you.

Art

Despite report of high unemployment rates and low pay for art majors, there are ways around getting stuck with a bad art degree. If you’re committed to studying art, make your college degree pay off by choosing the right school.

Starting salary for this job is $39,500/year. It offers strong growth of 23% over the next ten years. The field, though, remains small. There aren’t as many job openings listed online as there are in other healthcare careers.

Since potential employers don’t actively seek out workers with athletic training majors, you should diversify your degree. You do this by getting licensed or certified. You can also pick up a minor in business administration or education.

But to put even the most useless degrees to work, think about picking up a master’s that will lead you into administrative and director roles. These jobs pay higher wages.

Education might seem like a useful degree. You want to teach children? You earn a college degree in education.

But education majors must declare a specialty. Specialties include:

Secondary education
Special education

Some of the above specialties require students to earn a master’s degree if they plan to teach in that area. And if you want to specialize in your practice, you can’t graduate with only a general education degree.

Hospitality and Tourism

Since the travel industry ebbs and flows, the future for hospitality and tourism majors is uncertain. Travel depends on discretionary funds. Without it, people travel less.

Job growth for this industry remains stable, so it’s not as bad of a major as one might think. Job growth for lodging managers is 9%, which is about average. But food service managers see a 15% growth in jobs.

The median annual salary for lodging managers is about $44,000/year, but you can improve your earnings by picking up a management major. Instead of majoring in hospitality or tourism, try to find college majors with the word management in the title. This is the degree most major hotel chains look for.

10 U.S. Presidents Without College Degree Credentials

There are no educational requirements for US presidents. But most presidents have college degrees. Current US President, Joseph Biden, attended college at University of Delaware for undergraduate studies. He went to law school and received a law degree from Syracuse University in New York.

But some of the greatest presidents in US history never went to law school. They never attended college or graduated from it. Instead of getting college degrees, these presidents learned from hard work and determination.

Ever wondered which US president never went to school? The following list of presidents proves success does not need a college education. Read on to find out the presidents who didn’t go to college.

10. Andrew Johnson (1865-1869)

So what president never went to school or earned college degrees? The answer is Andrew Johnson. He came from an uneducated family, and both of his parents were illiterate. He received most of his education from work and friends.

At ten years old, Johnson’s parents sent him to work as a tailor’s apprentice. Here, a fellow employee taught him basic reading and writing skills. According to biographer Annette Gordon-Reed, this is where he developed skills for speech.

When he was 17, Johnson opened a tailor shop of his own in Greenville, Tennessee. He also met his wife Eliza McCardle, who helped him with 3 school subjects:

Compared with many US presidents, Johnson’s education is unorthodox. He never attended law school or earned college degrees. But on March 4, 1865, he became vice president during Abraham Lincoln’s second term. And a month later, on April 15, Johnson became the 17^th US president after Lincoln’s assassination.

He never set foot in a formal educational institution. Because of this, Johnson is the only president who never went to school.

9. Zachary Taylor (1849-1850)

Zachary Taylor is another of ten US presidents without college degree credentials. He grew up on the Ohio River in Kentucky. His parents were planters with little education.

Although Taylor was a quick learner, there were no formal schools where he lived. His early handwriting was “that of a near illiterate.” But this did not stop him from rising to presidential rank. Without a college degree, he became a success.

On May 3, 1808, Taylor joined the army as a first lieutenant.

He spent the next 40 years as a career officer in the US Armed Forces. He participated in many wars. These include:

The War of 1812
The Black Hawk War (1832)
The second of the Seminole Wars (1835-1842)
The Mexican American War (1846)

His military success garnered him the status of major general in 1846.

The Whig Party persuaded him to run for presidency. The general populous elected him because of Taylor’s status as a national hero. He took up office on March 4, 1849.

But his presidential term ended soon after, as Taylor died July 9, 1850. Medical examiners ruled the cause a digestive ailment, but rumors of poison circulated.

8. Millard Fillmore (1850-1853)

Millard Fillmore served as vice president to Taylor, who is the only president who never went to school. After Taylor’s sudden death, Fillmore took over as president. But before this, his formal education was rudimentary at best.

As a child, he worked on his father’s farm. He received most of his education in various one-room schoolhouses.

At age 14, he became an apprentice to a cloth maker in Sparta, New York. Soon after, he took up a similar position in New Hope.

Around five years later, Fillmore attended college at New Hope Academy for half a year. But soon he abandoned cloth making and worked for a local judge, who taught him law.

Fillmore then moved to Buffalo to study law in a lawyer’s office. He became an attorney in 1823 and the owner of his own firm in 1834. The firm (Fillmore, Hall and Haven) became well-regarded and respected.

And despite his lack of formal education, Fillmore founded the University of Buffalo.

He was also a member of four different political parties throughout his life.

Fillmore was the last member of the Whig Party to serve as president.

7. James Monroe (1817-1825)

James Monroe is not considered a president that never went to school. He received a more formal education than many on this list, but never attended college. Despite this, he never received a college degree.

His education started in Virginia, where his mother Elizabeth tutored him at home. Then, when he was 11, he attended Campbelltown Academy. As a child, he excelled at two subjects:

Mathematics
Latin

In 1774, he began studying at the College of William and Mary. There, Monroe became involved in revolutionary activities. But he dropped out of college in 1775 to join the Continental Army as an officer. He never completed his university degree. But his revolutionary activities continued.

In June of the same year, Monroe and a group of older cohorts broke into the Governor’s Palace. Following the battles of Lexington and Concord, they stole 200 muskets and 300 swords. They gave the weapons to the local militia.

Then in 1780, Monroe began studying law under Thomas Jefferson. He hoped a legal education might assist his aspiring political career.

And it did, because on March 4, 1817, Monroe became the fifth President of the United States. All without attending law schools.

6. Andrew Jackson (1829-1837)

For Andrew Jackson college wasn’t much of an option. By 15, he was both an orphan and a veteran of the American Revolutionary War.

The British held him as a prisoner when he was a teenager. He also suffered the loss of two brothers around the same time.

Because of the war, his early education was sporadic at best. School was not on the forefront of his mind. But after the war ended, he decided to further his education despite its rough beginning. He moved to Salisbury, North Carolina, to study law and passed the bar exam in 1787.

That same year, he became a country lawyer. Then, in 1788, he moved to the frontier town of Nashville. Here, he practiced law and involved himself in local politics. Jackson became the state’s first congressman, and later a senator.

In 1801 Jackson rose to commander of the Tennessee militia and led his forces to many victories. His actions during the War of 1812 made him a national hero. He earned two major awards.

Sworn in on March 4, 1829, Jackson held office as the seventh US president until 1837.

5. Grover Cleveland (1885-1897)

Which president never went to school or college? As this list shows, there are many, and Grover Cleveland is one of them. Like the other presidents listed here, he did not receive a college degree.

Cleveland grew up in Fayetteville, New York. Here, he attended school until age 16. The death of his father forced him to drop out and support his family.

His brother got him an assistant teacher position at the New York Institute for the Blind. But Cleveland only held this job for a year before moving out west. One of his church elders offered to pay for his college education if he became a minister. But Cleveland turned the offer down and headed for Buffalo.

Here, his uncle employed him as a clerk. Through this job, Cleveland met many influential figures. He soon started working for the law firm Rogers, Bowen, and Rogers.

In 1859, the law firm helped him pass the bar exam.

Despite his lack of college education or college degrees, Cleveland’s political career grew. He became the Buffalo mayor and served as the 31^st governor of New York.

Because he never attended college, Cleveland did not enjoy high culture. His free time consisted of the following:

Poker parties
Democratic organizational work
Drinking with friends

He rarely traveled or read, unlike other presidential figures. But his experiences in law led him to the presidency in 1885.

Cleveland remains the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. And given his informal education, he is a president that never went to school.

4. William Henry Harrison (1841)

William Henry Harrison had a notable political family. Growing up in Virginia, he studied Latin and French at many institutions. By the time he was 18, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. Here, he studied medicine.

But Harrison did not enjoy his studies, so when his father died that same year, he dropped out. Because his father’s death left him without college funds, Harrison joined the US Army.

He was in the army for seven years until he retired. Then, he set forth on a political career, becoming the Indiana Territory’s governor in 1801.

On March 3, 1841, he became the ninth President of the United States.

Harrison is best known for serving the briefest term in US presidential history and without college degrees. He died a month after his inauguration of two different causes:

Pneumonia
Septicemia

3. George Washington (1789-1797)

George Washington is another answer to the question “who was the only president who never went to school?” He never went to college and received no education past the age of 11.

He spent his childhood in Virginia, learning from several tutors. He also attended an Anglican clergyman-run school for some time. But when Washington was 11, his father died and left little money. This prevented him from attending the Appleby School in England like his brothers.

To support his studies, Washington taught himself through reading and exploration. Three major forces drove his self-education:

The Fairfax family

Lawrence exposed George Washington to the high social class of Virginia. And the Fairfax family taught him mathematics and science.

Washington also credits his mother for the success he achieved later in life. Of her, Washington said, “All I am I owe to my mother.”

And in 1789, he became the first President of the United States.

2. Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865)

Abraham Lincoln is another of our ten presidents without college degree credentials. He received little academic training during his formative years. By the time he was 18, he could “read, write and cipher.” But his limited formal schooling from itinerant teachers didn’t amount to much else.

Despite this, Lincoln was an ambitious learner. He devoured any book he came across, including those on law. But he never receive a bachelor’s degree or went to law school. His self-teaching and dedication to hard work made him a practicing lawyer.

Lawyer life

Abraham Lincoln spent eight years on the Illinois legislature and traveled courtroom to courtroom. Although he had no formal schooling or a law degree, Lincoln viewed learning as crucial.

One of his law partners described his ambition as “a little engine that knew no rest.” It was this ambition that led him to the presidency.

Lincoln held office from March 4, 1861, until his assassination on April 15, 1865.

1. Harry S. Truman (1945-1953)

While Truman isn’t the answer to the question “who is the only president that never went to school?”, he never received a college degree. But this does not mean he didn’t appreciate education.

As a young child, Truman enjoyed three main subjects:

History
Piano
Reading

In 1901 he graduated from Independence High School. The institution now called William Chrisman High School.

He then enrolled in Spalding’s Commercial College to study business. But he dropped out after one semester and didn’t receive a bachelor’s degree. His family’s financial situation became dire by the day. Soon, they were unable to pay for Truman’s education.

But in 1923 he gave higher education a second try. He took night classes at the Kansas City School of Law.

Then, in 1925 he lost his administrative government job with the Jackson County Court. And again, he dropped out of school.

His second attempt failed after he lost his administrative government job with the Jackson County Court. Despite rumors, he never went to law school and was without a college degree.

After his trouble with college, Truman became a US senator in 1934. And on January 20, 1945, he became vice president, serving under Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Three months later, FDR’s sudden death thrust Truman into the limelight. Before this, he had served as vice president a mere 82 days. He became the 33^rd US president, holding office until January 20, 1953.

Truman is the most recent US president to have never obtained law degrees or even a bachelor’s degree. But the politician still realized the importance of education.

As Truman once said, “Knowledge is not only key to power. It is the citadel of human freedom.”

Most presidents like John Quincy Adams and Bill Clinton have earned college degrees or attended law school. They attended Columbia law school, for example, and earned law degrees. They are also college graduates with a bachelor’s degree and graduate school education. Very few are without a college degree.

Even older presidents have at least a college diploma or a bachelor’s degree. And most attended graduate school where they earned college degrees. But without a college degree or if you never attended Columbia Law School, you can still be a success. Because Bill Clinton or Barack Obama went to school, doesn’t mean you have to. Unless, of course, you plan to follow in their footsteps on your road to the White House.
